What Is Jianghu? A Guide for Phantom Blade Zero Players

Jianghu

Jianghu is not a guild you can join in this game’s menu, and it is not a historical office. In modern Chinese it usually names the unofficial world of wanderers, performers, outlaws, and martial artists, set against the court.

The game’s own pages prefer other words: Phantom World in 2023, Wulin in 2026. This page says what jianghu commonly means, then shows where the game does and does not use it.

Meaning and context

The compound is old. Rivers and lakes, taken literally, are geography. In fiction and everyday speech of the last century it became the world outside official power: people who live by skill, reputation, and favors, with rules that are real to them and invisible to a magistrate. Dictionaries do not all draw the boundary in the same place. The account above is this record’s definition, drawn from common modern usage rather than from a single dictionary entry.

A useful test is the opposite word. If a text sets jianghu against the court, it is using the social meaning. If it is naming a lake district, it is not. Phantom Blade Zero’s marketing is closer to the first, but it rarely needs the English word jianghu because it already says Wulin and Phantom World.

People and relationships

Stories in this setting run on debt, names, masters, and disciples more often than on laws. A person can be righteous and still be outside the state. Two sects can share a word for honor and still kill each other over it. That variety is the point. One web definition should not be stretched over every novel.

GamerSky’s July 2025 report says Liang described xia culture as rooted among ordinary people, peddlers and wanderers, and described jianghu as the counterpart of the court. He is reported to have wanted the main plot and the side stories to carry that atmosphere. The report is not a dictionary, but it is the studio-side sentence this site can actually cite.

Jianghu in this game

Use the game’s words for the game’s places. Phantom World is Liang’s 2023 name for the setting. Wulin is the name in the August 2026 PlayStation post. The Epic Chinese recap mixes 武林 and 江湖 in its own prose. When this site says jianghu, it means the cultural idea. When it says Wulin or Phantom World, it is quoting the game’s materials.

The Order, as described in 2023, sits inside that world and then expels Soul. That is a story structure players will recognize from martial fiction. It does not prove that The Order is a historical school, or that every side quest is a jianghu parable.

Wuxia is the next distinction: a modern genre of stories, not a place. Kungfupunk is the studio’s own label for how this particular world looks. A separate essay on wulin versus jianghu can wait until it has more to say than the paragraphs above.

The difference between jianghu and the Wulin is stated above, and carried into the glossary.
