From Rainblood to Phantom Blade Zero

Series

The English-language account in the developer’s own 2023 essay is short. He made Rainblood: Town of Death in RPG Maker in 2010, founded S-GAME after returning to China, shipped Phantom Blade mostly as phone games inside China, and then built Phantom Blade Zero as a spiritual rebirth on Unreal Engine 5.

Press timelines add Chinese titles and earlier years. This page does not merge those titles into his English sentence until the names are checked one by one.

Release timeline

What Liang dates himself: a 2010 RPG Maker game called Rainblood: Town of Death, made while he was studying architecture in Beijing and then in New Haven, as an escape from that difficulty. He does not name the university. The essay then jumps to the studio and the phone games, and claims a fan base of over 20 million. That number is his, in that essay.

The public milestones after that, on this site’s timeline, are announcements rather than older release dates: the 2023 essay, the June 2026 letter that moves the launch from 9 September to 29 October 2026, and the date printed on the official site.

Changes in gameplay

The 2010 game, in his telling, is an RPG Maker story. Phantom Blade Zero is a real-time action game. The spiritual rebirth is a claim about intent and about Soul’s kind of story, not a claim that the control scheme survived. A player who finds an old phone game will be playing something else.

Mobile era

Liang writes that most of the Phantom Blade phone games were never released outside China. He does not, in the essay, give a platform-by-platform catalog. The essay gives no platform list. A current purchase follows the store that still offers the title.

Zero as a new interpretation

“Spiritual rebirth” is the phrase in the 2023 essay. It licenses a new telling. It does not license this site to treat every later trailer detail as a retcon of the 2010 game. Questions of continuity are set out on the play-order page.
